Science & the Bible

(Quotations are from The Living Translation)

It amazes me how far off course people get in trying to reconcile differences between religious people and secular scientific people. There are no conflicts between science and the Bible because they both have God as their author. But scientific people without faith in God, become fools when they try to explain science.

Rom 1:16-25 For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes--Jews first and also Gentiles. {17} This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, "It is through faith that a righteous person has life." {18} But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who push the truth away from themselves. {19} For the truth about God is known to them instinctively. God has put this knowledge in their hearts. {20} From the time the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky and all that God made. They can clearly see his invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse whatsoever for not knowing God. {21} Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn't worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. The result was that their minds became dark and confused. {22} Claiming to be wise, they became utter fools instead. {23} And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people, or birds and animals and snakes. {24} So God let them go ahead and do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other's bodies. {25} Instead of believing what they knew was the truth about God, they deliberately chose to believe lies. So they worshiped the things God made but not the Creator himself, who is to be praised forever. Amen.

Many from the religious community also become fools. They abandon the simple truths of the Scripture and hold to the myths of the godless secular society. They think these people who use scientific terms over their heads must know what they are talking about. But no one can be wise who rejects the simple, basic truths. Let's look at some.

  1. God created everything.
  2. The Bible, or Holy Scripture, is the written form of His infallible Word.
  3. Salvation is by grace, through faith. It is a free gift from God - paid for by the death of Jesus on the cross.
  4. Without faith it is impossible to please God.

Even the natural laws show a Creator was required to bring all things into existence. The second law of thermodynamics states that in a system the ENTROPY cannot decrease for any spontaneous process.

Entropy is a quantity specifying the amount of disorder or randomness in a system bearing energy or information. In THERMODYNAMICS, entropy indicates the degree to which a given quantity of thermal energy is available for doing useful work-the greater the entropy, the less available the energy. According to the second law of thermodynamics, during any process the change in entropy of a system and its surroundings is either zero or positive; thus the entropy of the universe as a whole tends towards a maximum. In plain language, this means the universe is running down. Life is getting worse - not better.

Those who place their faith in evolution claim to be following science - but in fact they ignore science. They assume the present natural laws were always in effect, but those laws show something had to happen in the past that is not happening now. If the universe is running down - it had to be wound up sometime. If order is becoming disorder - someone had to create order in the first place.

When God created everything in six days, He did things differently than are happening now. The laws which determine how fast things move, or grow, or happen were not in effect. Although God told us in the Scriptures how long He took to create everything, He didn't tell us how he did it. He didn't say what He did every minute of each day. Many of the things evolutionists think happened in millions of years happened in seconds or hours. I would rather believe God than man about how creation happened - after all, God was there.

Consider this. What if you looked at a lump of clay that had been hollowed out to make a bowl. You could have observed the effects of the weather and time on the clay and assume how long it took for the clay to go from a lump to a bowl. You would have to make some assumptions about the weather, of course. Maybe once a deep freeze was needed, or a great heat, or a large amount of rain. You could let your imagination go wild and in the end you have your theory of how the bowl evolved.

But you forgot something - the Potter. He was not limited by the speed nature would take. He used His hands to mold the clay and did it in a much shorter time than you imagined. Wouldn't your theories look foolish? Get the point?

Heb 11:1-3, What is faith? It is the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen. It is the evidence of things we cannot yet see. {2} God gave his approval to people in days of old because of their faith. {3} By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God's command, that what we now see did not come from anything that can be seen.

The universe came into existence from God's actions - not through any natural laws that can be observed now.

It is no accident that when society rejects God and embraces its own form of distorted "truth," the result is chaos, self-destruction, and depravity.

Rom 3:20-28 For no one can ever be made right in God's sight by doing what his law commands. For the more we know God's law, the clearer it becomes that we aren't obeying it. {21} But now God has shown us a different way of being right in his sight--not by obeying the law but by the way promised in the Scriptures long ago. {22} We are made right in God's sight when we trust in Jesus Christ to take away our sins. And we all can be saved in this same way, no matter who we are or what we have done. {23} For all have sinned; all fall short of God's glorious standard. {24} Yet now God in his gracious kindness declares us not guilty. He has done this through Christ Jesus, who has freed us by taking away our sins. {25} For God sent Jesus to take the punishment for our sins and to satisfy God's anger against us. We are made right with God when we believe that Jesus shed his blood, sacrificing his life for us. God was being entirely fair and just when he did not punish those who sinned in former times. {26} And he is entirely fair and just in this present time when he declares sinners to be right in his sight because they believe in Jesus. {27} Can we boast, then, that we have done anything to be accepted by God? No, because our acquittal is not based on our good deeds. It is based on our faith. {28} So we are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law.

Eph 2:8-9, God saved you by his special favor when you believed. And you can't take credit for this; it is a gift from God. {9} Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. {10} For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so that we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

The real Power is at the Cross

Jesus - God in the Flesh - Purchased our Salvation

Col 1:13-20 For he has rescued us from the one who rules in the kingdom of darkness, and he has brought us into the Kingdom of his dear Son. {14} God has purchased our freedom with his blood and has forgiven all our sins. {15} Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before God made anything at all and is supreme over all creation. {16} Christ is the one through whom God created everything in heaven and earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can't see--kings, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities. Everything has been created through him and for him. {17} He existed before everything else began, and he holds all creation together. {18} Christ is the head of the church, which is his body. He is the first of all who will rise from the dead, so he is first in everything. {19} For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, {20} and by him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of his blood on the cross.

You cannot be an effective Christian without accepting the fullness of Christ.

The Lord Jesus Christ

John 1:1-4, In the beginning the Word already existed. He was with God, and he was God. {2} He was in the beginning with God. {3} He created everything there is. Nothing exists that he didn't make. {4} Life itself was in him, and this life gives light to everyone.

John 1:9-14, The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was going to come into the world. {10} But although the world was made through him, the world didn't recognize him when he came. {11} Even in his own land and among his own people, he was not accepted. {12} But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. {13} They are reborn! This is not a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan--this rebirth comes from God. {14} So the Word became human and lived here on earth among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the only Son of the Father.
