REDEMPTION
Redemption means to deliver by paying a price. The work of Christ fulfilling the OT
types and prophecies of redemption is set forth in three principal Greek words.
Agorozo - to buy in the market
Man is viewed as a slave sold to sin.
ROM 7:14, "For we know that the Law is spiritual; but I am of flesh, sold
into bondage to sin."
- He is under a death sentence.
ROM 6:23, "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is
eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
He is redeemed by the purchase price of the blood of the Redeemer.
1CO 6:20, "For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in
your body. "
Exagorozo - to buy out of the market, to
purchase and remove from further sale
1CO 7:23, "You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of
men."GAL 4:4-5, "But when the fulness of the time came, God sent forth
His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, in order that He might redeem those who were
under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
Lutroo - to loose or set free, used commonly to indicate the release of a slave
TIT 2:11, "For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all
men, 12 instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live
sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope
and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus; 14 who
gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for
Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. "
