PART OF THE PICTURE
1 Cor 13:9, For we know in part and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is
perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I
spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man,
I put away childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face.
Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.
Paul offers a glimpse into the future to give us hope that one day we will be complete
when we see God face to face. We don't have all the answers now, but one day we will.
Someday we will see Christ in person and be able to see with God's perspective.
Romans 8:26, Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what
we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with
groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind
of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of
God. 28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those
who are the called according to His purpose.
God works in "all things"--not just isolated incidents--for our good. This
does not mean that all that happens to us is good. Evil is prevalent in our fallen world,
but God is able to turn every circumstance around for our long-range good. Note that God
is not working to make us happy, but to fulfill his purpose. Note also that this promise
is not for everybody. It can be claimed only by those who love God and are called
according to his purpose. Those who are "called" are those the Holy Spirit
convinces and enables to receive Christ. Such people have a new perspective, a new
mind-set on life. They trust in God, not life's treasures; they look for their security in
heaven, not on earth; they learn to accept, not resent, pain and persecution because God
is with them.
A real Christian is odd:
- He feels supreme love for One whom he has never seen;
- talks familiarly every day to Someone he cannot see;
- expects to go to heaven on the virtue of Another;
- empties himself in order to be full;
- admits he is wrong so he can be declared right;
- goes down in order to get up;
- is strongest when he is weakest;
- richest when he is poorest and happiest when he feels the worst.
- He dies so he can live;
- forsakes in order to have;
- gives away so he can keep;
- sees the invisible;
- hears the inaudible;
- and knows that which passeth knowledge. (A. W. Tozer)
NAMES OF GOD MEAN DIFFERENT THINGS
Exodus 3:13, Then Moses said to God, "Indeed, when I come to the children of
Israel and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they say to me,
'What is His name?' what shall I say to them?" 14 And God said to Moses, "I AM
WHO I AM." And He said, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, 'I AM has
sent me to you.'" 15 Moreover God said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the
children of Israel: 'The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac,
and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial
to all generations.'
Yahweh, or LORD, was used to indicate one who delivers. Gof had promised to deliver
Israel but had never done so That is why He said "I AM WHO I AM". In other words
He couldn/t give them examples of how He had delivered in the past - but forevermore He
would use this experiance as an example, or a memorial.
God reminded Moses of his covenant promises to Abraham (Genesis 12:1-3;15;17), Isaac
(Genesis 26:2-5), and Jacob (Genesis 28:13-15). What God promised hundreds of years
earlier he would fulfill through Moses.
Exodus 6:2, And God spoke to Moses and said to him: "I am the LORD. 3 "I
appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name LORD I was
not known to them. 4 "I have also established My covenant with them, to give them the
land of Canaan, the land of their pilgrimage, in which they were strangers. 5 "And I
have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel whom the Egyptians keep in bondage,
and I have remembered My covenant. 6 "Therefore say to the children of Israel: 'I am
the LORD; I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, I will rescue you
from their bondage, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great
judgments. 7 'I will take you as My people, and I will be your God. Then you shall know
that I am the LORD your God who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 8
'And I will bring you into the land which I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob;
and I will give it to you as a heritage: I am the LORD.'"
GOD IS GREATER THAN ALL OF OUR
EXPECTATIONS
Job 11:7, "Can you search out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limits
of the Almighty? 8 They are higher than heaven--what can you do? Deeper than Sheol--what
can you know? 9 Their measure is longer than the earth And broader than the sea.
God is so big many words and descriptions are used to show different aspects. The
Father-Son relationship is many times used as well as the Unity of God being stressed.
Many adopt a few of the descriptions as their only view of God and make that image their
god. To get a complete picture, we need to use all of the scripture as well as the Spirit.
Mark 12:29, Jesus answered him, "The first of all the commandments is: 'Hear, O
Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one.
1 Cor 8:5, For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as
there are many gods and many lords), 6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom
are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things,
and through whom we live.
1 Tim 2:5, For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ
Jesus, 6 who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time, 7 for which I was
appointed a preacher and an apostle--I am speaking the truth in Christ and not lying--a
teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
Luke 3:22, And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a
voice came from heaven which said, "You are My beloved Son; in You I am well
pleased."
John 3:35, "The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand.
John 14:16, "And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper,
that He may abide with you forever-- 17 "the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot
receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with
you and will be in you.
1 Tim 3:16, And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was
manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the
Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory.
1 John 5:7, For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and
the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.Looking at the whole picture
takes the mind of Christ.
1 Cor 2:9, But as it is written: "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have
entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love
Him." 10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches
all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except
the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the
Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is
from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. 13 These
things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit
teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 But the natural man does not
receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know
them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But he who is spiritual judges all
things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. 16 For "who has known the mind of
the LORD that he may instruct Him?" But we have the mind of Christ.
