MIND
1 Cor 1:18, For the word of the cross is to those who are perishing foolishness, but
to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, "I WILL
DESTROY THE WISDOM OF THE WISE, AND THE CLEVERNESS OF THE CLEVER I WILL SET ASIDE."
20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not
God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world
through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness
of the message preached to save those who believe. 22 For indeed Jews ask for signs, and
Greeks search for wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block,
and to Gentiles foolishness, 24 but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks,
Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser
than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. 26 For consider your calling,
brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many
noble; 27 but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God
has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, 28 and the
base things of the world and the despised, God has chosen, the things that are not, that
He might nullify the things that are, 29 that no man should boast before God.
NATURAL MIND CHARACTERIZED BY:
DARKNESS, DISTORTED WORSHIP, EVIL,
EMPTY
Rom 1:21-22, For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God, or give
thanks; but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was
darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools,
Many, "enlightened" Americans seem to know little or nothing about the Bible.
A few years ago, a test of Bible knowledge was given to five classes of high school
seniors. Most of them failed the exam completely! Some were so confused that they thought
Sodom and Gomorrah were lovers, or that the gospels were written by Matthew, Mark, Luther,
and John. Others said that Eve was created from an apple. More than 80 percent of the
pupils could not complete such familiar quotations as "Many are called but few are chosen";
or "a soft answer turneth away wrath." How deplorable that such ignorance
of the Bible is so widespread in a nation where the Judeo-Christian ethic has shaped the
destiny of our land for more than 200 years.
Benjamin Franklin, who was ridiculed at one time in Paris for his defense of the Bible,
was determined to find out how much of it his scoffer had read. He informed one of the
learned societies that he had come across a story of pastoral life in ancient times that
seemed to him very beautiful but he would like the opinion of the society. A night was
arranged for Franklin to read to the assembly of scholars a lyric which impressed him. The
Bible lover read the Book of Ruth, and when he had finished the scholars were in ecstasies
and begged Franklin to print it. "It is already in print," said Franklin.
"It is a part of the Bible you ridicule."
Eph 4:17-18, this I say therefore, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no
longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, being darkened in
their understanding, excluded from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in
them, because of the hardness of their heart;
Gen 6:5, Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that
every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
AT WAR WITH GOD
Rom 8:6, For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is
life and peace, 7 because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not
subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so;
INCAPACITY TO RECEIVE GOD'S TRUTH
1 Cor 2:14, But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God; for
they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually
appraised.
DEPRAVED AND CORRUPT
Rom 1:28, And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave
them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper,
1 Tim 6:5, and constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the
truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.
CONCEITED
Col 2:18, Let no one keep defrauding you of your prize by delighting in self-abasement
and the worship of the angels, taking his stand on visions he has seen, inflated without
cause by his fleshly mind,
DEFILED
Titus 1:15, To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and
unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.
EARTHLY
Phil 3:19, whose end is destruction, whose god is their appetite, and whose glory is
in their shame, who set their minds on earthly things.
BLINDED
2 Cor 4:4, in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the
unbelieving, that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who
is the image of God.
A woman named Rose Crawford had been blind for 50 years. She wept for joy when for the
first time in her life a world of form and color greeted eyes that now were able to see.
The amazing thing about the story, however, is that 20 years of her blindness had been
unnecessary. She didn't know that surgical techniques had been developed, and that an
operation could have restored her vision at the age of 30. Much of her life could have
been different. Why did she continue to assume that her situation was hopeless? Had no one
told her about the wonderful advances in eye surgery? What about the plight of those
unreached by the Gospel. How many will go on living in moral blindness unless we bring
them to the Savior? Millions will never know anything but spiritual darkness because no
one has shared with them the Light that has come into the world.
NEW MIND
EDUCATION IS NOT THE CURE - NEW
MIND IS
1 Cor 2:7, but we speak God's wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom, which God
predestined before the ages to our glory; 8 the wisdom which none of the rulers of this
age has understood; for if they had understood it, they would not have crucified the Lord
of glory; 9 but just as it is written, "THINGS WHICH EYE HAS NOT SEEN AND EAR HAS NOT
HEARD, AND which HAVE NOT ENTERED THE HEART OF MAN, ALL THAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE
WHO LOVE HIM." 10 For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit
searches all things, even the depths of God. 11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a
man except the spirit of the man, which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one
knows except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but
the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things freely given to us by God, 13
which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by
the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words. 14 But a natural man does
not accept the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot
understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. 15 But he who is spiritual
appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no man. 16 For WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND
OF THE LORD, THAT HE SHOULD INSTRUCT HIM? But we have the mind of Christ.
NEW MIND CAN KNOW GOD -
TRANSFORMED
Rom 12:1, I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your
bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of
worship. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of
your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable
and perfect.
Once a spider built a beautiful web in an old house. He kept it clean and shiny so that
flies would patronize it. The minute he got a "customer" he would clean up on
him so the other flies would not get suspicious.
Then one day this fairly intelligent fly came buzzing by the clean spider web. Old man
spider called out, "Come in and sit." But the fairly intelligent fly said,
"No, sir. I don't see other flies in your house, and I am not going in alone!"
But presently he saw on the floor below a large crowd of flies dancing around on a
piece of brown paper. He was delighted! He was not afraid if lots of flies were doing it.
So he came in for a landing. Just before he landed, a bee zoomed by, saying, "Don't
land there, stupid! That's flypaper!" But the fairly intelligent fly shouted back,
"Don't be silly. Those flies are dancing. There's a big crowd there. Everybody's
doing it. That many flies can't be wrong!" Well, you know what happened. He died on
the spot.
Some of us want to be with the crowd so badly that we end up in a mess. What does it
profit a fly (or a person) if he escapes the web only to end up on the glue?
HOLY SPIRIT TEACHES NEW MIND
John 14:26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My
name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
John 16:12 "I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
13 "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth;
for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He
will disclose to you what is to come. 14 "He shall glorify Me; for He shall take of
Mine, and shall disclose it to you. 15 "All things that the Father has are Mine;
therefore I said, that He takes of Mine, and will disclose it to you.
CONFLICT
Rom 8:5 For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the
flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For the mind
set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, 7 because the
mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of
God, for it is not even able to do so; 8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
EXHORTATION TO BE RENEWED IN MIND
Eph 4:23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
Col 3:5-9, Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality,
impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. For it is on account
of these things that the wrath of God will come, and in them you also once walked, when
you were living in them. But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice,
slander, and abusive speech from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you laid
aside the old self with its evil practices,
LET THIS MIND BE IN YOU (DOMINATE)
Phil 2:5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who,
although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be
grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the
likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming
obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
It is said of our attitude:
- It is the "advance man" of our true selves.
- Its roots are inward but its fruit is outward.
- It is our best friend or our worst enemy.
- It is more honest and more consistent than our words.
- It is an outward look based on past experiences.
- It is a thing which draws people to us or repels them.
- It is never content until it is expressed.
- It is the librarian of our past;
- It is the speaker of our present;
- It is the prophet of our future.
FILL MIND WITH WORD
1 Pet 2:2, like newborn babes, long for the pure milk of the word, that by it you may
grow in respect to salvation,
Psa 119:11, Thy word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against Thee.
Jer 15:16, Thy words were found and I ate them, And Thy words became for me a joy and
the delight of my heart; For I have been called by Thy name, O LORD God of hosts.
2 Cor 10:3, For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, 4
for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the
destruction of fortresses. 5 We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised
up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience
of Christ,
- The mind is a garden that could be cultivated to produce the harvest that we desire.
- The mind is a workshop where the important decisions of life and eternity are made.
- The mind is an armory where we forge the weapons for our victory or our destruction.
- The mind is a battlefield where all the decisive battles of life are won or lost.
