MAKE UP YOUR MIND
ROM 12:1-3, "I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to
present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your
spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed
by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which
is good and acceptable and perfect. For through the grace given to me I say to every man
among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as
to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith."
BEING A CHRISTIAN
REQUIRES A CHANGE OF MIND
LUK 10:27, "And he answered and said, "You shall love the Lord your
God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with
all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself."
- The mind is a garden that can be cultivated to produce the harvest that we desire.
- The mind is a workshop where the important decisions of life and eternity are made.
- The mind is an armory where we forge the weapons for our victory or our destruction.
- The mind is a battlefield where all the decisive battles of life are won or lost.
MENTAL FOCUS
ROM 8:5-8, "For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on
the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the
Spirit. For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and
peace, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject
itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so; and those who are in the flesh
cannot please God."
FOCUS ON FLESH IS TRADITION
MAT 15:3, "And He answered and said to them, "And why do you
yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?"
MAR 7:8, "Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of
men."
COL 2:8, "See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and
empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles
of the world, rather than according to Christ."
SERVE GOD WITH MIND
ROM 7:25, "Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the
one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh
the law of sin."
THE MIND OF CHRIST
1 COR 2:16, "For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he should
instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ."
PHI 2:5-7, "Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ
Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a
thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being
made in the likeness of men."
SOME THINGS BLIND THE MIND
- TRADITION
- PRIDE
- EMOTION
- DISTRACTIONS
- RICHES
WE CANN'T PAY ATTENTION TO CHRIST
IF OUR ATTENTION IS ON SELF
JAM 1:5-8, "But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives
to all men generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask
in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea driven
and tossed by the wind. For let not that man expect that he will receive anything from the
Lord, being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways."
THE ANSWER ISN'T HARD
2CO 8:12, "For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according
to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not."
- All be of one mind with other Christians.
1PE 3:8-9, "Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of
another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: Not rendering evil for evil, or
railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that
ye should inherit a blessing."
- Set your mind on the Good.
PHI 4:8, "Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable,
whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if
there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these
things."
Recent experiments have been made in which people were fitted with special glasses.
These devices greatly distort the vision so that straight lines appeared to be curved, and
sharp outlines seemed fringed with color. In just a few days, the unnatural shapes, tinted
edges, and inverted landscapes disappeared, and the world began to be normal again, even
though they still wore the glasses. The brain was able to ignore the false data that came
through the prismatic lenses. This adaptability in the physical realm is a blessing. In
the area of the spiritual, the human mind does not function so well. In fact, man is a
sinner whose deepest imaginations are evil, and his though-life produces a world of
illusions. He thinks of himself as pure when in reality he is guilty before God.
