GIVE TO GET
Mark 8:34, When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said
to them, "Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his
cross, and follow Me. 35 "For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but
whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it. 36 "For what will
it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? 37 "Or what will
a man give in exchange for his soul?
We should be willing to lose our lives for the sake of the gospel, not because our
lives are useless but because nothing--not even life itself--can compare to what we gain
with Christ. Jesus wants us to choose to follow him rather than to lead a life of sin and
self-satisfaction. He wants us to stop trying to control our own destiny and to let him
direct us. This makes good sense because, as the Creator, Christ knows better than we do
what real life is about. He asks for submission, not self-hatred; he asks us only to lose
our self-centered determination to be in charge.
If this present life is most important to you, you will do everything you can to
protect it. You will not want to do anything that might endanger your safety, health, or
comfort. By contrast, if following Jesus is most important, you may find yourself in
unsafe, unhealthy, and uncomfortable places. You will risk death, but you will not fear it
because you know that Jesus will raise you to eternal life. Nothing material can
compensate for the loss of eternal life. Jesus' disciples are not to use their lives on
earth for their own pleasure--they should spend their lives serving God and people.
Once a chicken and a pig took a trip together. After many miles and many hours on the
road, they got hungry. Finally, the sharp-eyed chicken spotted a restaurant. Approaching
the door they read a sign which said, "Ham and Eggs: Our Specialty!" "Hold
it!" shouted the pig. "What's the matter?" asked the chicken. "Plenty.
All they want from you is a little compromise. They are asking me for total
commitment!"
Upon first reading, these precepts gleaned from the gospels seem to defy human logic. A
deeper study, however, will reveal that in them the Lord has outlined a wondrous pattern
and a wise design for believers who want to enjoy a successful, overcoming life. Note
these paradoxes:
- We see unseen things (2 Cor. 4:18);
- we conquer by yielding (Rom. 6:16-18);
- we find rest under a yoke (Mt. 11:28-30);
- we reign by serving (Mk 10:42-44);
- we are made great by becoming little (Lk 9:48);
- we are exalted by being humble (Mt. 23:12);
- we become wise by being fools for Christ's sake (1 Cor. 1:20, 21);
- we are made free by becoming His bond servants (Rom. 6:10);
- we wax strong by being weak (2 Cor. 12:10);
- we triumph by defeat (2 Cor. 12:7-9);
- we find victory by glorying in our infirmities(2 Cor. 12:5);
- and we live by dying (John 12:24,25; 2 Cor. 4:10,11)
MOSES OFFERED HIS LIFE
Exodus 32:30, Now it came to pass on the next day that Moses said to the people,
"You have committed a great sin. So now I will go up to the LORD; perhaps I can make
atonement for your sin." 31 Then Moses returned to the LORD and said, "Oh, these
people have committed a great sin, and have made for themselves a god of gold! 32
"Yet now, if You will forgive their sin--but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book
which You have written." 33 And the LORD said to Moses, "Whoever has sinned
against Me, I will blot him out of My book.
PROUD ABASED
HUMBLE EXALTED
James 4:6, But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: "God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble." 7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he
will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands,
you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament and mourn and weep! Let
your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the
sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.
FIRST - LAST & LAST - FIRST
Matthew 19:29, "And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father
or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name's sake, shall receive a hundredfold,
and inherit eternal life. 30 "But many who are first will be last, and the last
first.
Mark 9:34, But they kept silent, for on the road they had disputed among themselves
who would be the greatest. 35 And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them,
"If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all."
