Humanism came like the Four Horsemen

Re 6:1-8, And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. {2} And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer. {3} And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see. {4} And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword. {5} And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. {6} And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine. {7} And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see. {8} And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

When Jesus answered the Disciples' questions about the destruction of the temple in 70AD, he described events like the four horsemen. These symbols can be applied to several places in history. In this message we will compare the advent of Humanism to them. First, look at what Jesus told the disciples:

Mat 24:1-8, And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to [him] for to shew him the buildings of the temple. {2} And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. {3} And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what [shall be] the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? {4} And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. {5} For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. (like white horse) {6} And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: (like red horse) see that ye be not troubled: for all [these things] must come to pass, but the end is not yet. {7} For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, (like pale horse) and earthquakes, in divers places. {8} All these [are] the beginning of sorrows.

These events are destined to be repeated throughout history because whenever anyone claims to be the savior and puts himself or anything else in the place of Jesus - he is bound to fail. If man would simply learn the lessons of history, they would point him to Jesus as man's only hope. Now let's see how this example applies to Humanism.

White Horse

Rev 6:2, And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.

In the modern era, humanism came upon the scene as the rider on the white horse. The world saw it as the answer to all their problems.

The secular world and much of the religious world made humanism the dominant philosophy. They crowned it and bowed down to it.

Like the horseman, it had a bow but no arrows. It promised peace and love.

Red Horse

Rev 6:4, And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.

The humanism that people thought would bring peace brought killing and violence instead.

Black Horse

Rev 6:5, And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. {6} And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.

Humanism invaded the church. People saw the problems and wanted help on one hand and wanted to do whatever they felt like doing on the other hand.

  • By the way, the alcohol industry points to statistics that show the numbers of people killed on the roads by drunk drivers is down. They color the truth. The numbers are down mostly because the number of miles driven is down and more safety features like seat belts and child restraint seats are used. The percentage of deaths attributed to drunk drivers is essentially the same. The percentage remains about 42%, however, only 68% of the drivers killed are tested and only 25% of the surviving drivers are tested. Which drivers (or surviving families) do you think avoid testing? Those who are not drunk would have nothing to hide, so I believe the actual percentage should be much higher than 42%.
  • Pale Horse

Rev 6:7, And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see. {8} And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

The result of humanism is death. The Scriptures teach us that if we seek to save our lives, we will loose them. If we are selfish and only care about ourselves, we actually hurt ourselves. If we seek the ‘pleasures of sin for a season,’ that is all we get – at the most. We have nothing that will last.

The features of humanism like uncontrolled lusts, homosexuality, drugs, drunkenness, etc only result in death.

The only source of real help is the Lord Jesus Christ. Only He with an eternal perspective can lead us to make choices that will have lasting effects. He is the only one with Eternal live to offer.

The "our way" of humanism leads to destruction.

It results in the works of the flesh:

Gal 5:19-21, Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are [these]; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, {20} Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, {21} Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told [you] in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

The Way of Christ Results in Eternal Life.

It results in the fruit of the Spirit:

Gal 5:22-21, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, {23} Meekness, temperance:..
