DEVIL
ISA 14:12-17, "How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son
of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, You who have weakened the nations!
"But you said in your heart, 'I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above
the stars of God, And I will sit on the mount of assembly In the recesses of the north. I
will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.'
Nevertheless you will be thrust down to Sheol, To the recesses of the pit. Those who see
you will gaze at you, They will ponder over you, saying, 'Is this the man who made the
earth tremble, Who shook kingdoms, Who made the world like a wilderness And overthrew its
cities, Who did not allow his prisoners to go home?"
EZE 28:14-17, "You were the anointed cherub who covers, And I placed you
there. You were on the holy mountain of God; You walked in the midst of the stones of
fire. You were blameless in your ways From the day you were created, Until unrighteousness
was found in you. By the abundance of your trade You were internally filled with violence,
And you sinned; Therefore I have cast you as profane From the mountain of God. And I have
destroyed you, O covering cherub, From the midst of the stones of fire. Your heart was
lifted up because of your beauty; You corrupted your wisdom by reason of your splendor. I
cast you to the ground; I put you before kings, That they may see you."
LUK 10:17-20, "And the seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even
the demons are subject to us in Your name. And He said to them, "I was watching Satan
fall from heaven like lightning. Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents
and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall injure you.
Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that
your names are recorded in heaven."
GEN 3:1, "Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field
which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, "Indeed, has God said, 'You
shall not eat from any tree of the garden'?" 2 And the woman said to the
serpent, "From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; 3 but from the
fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, 'You shall not eat
from it or touch it, lest you die.' 4 And the serpent said to the woman, "You
surely shall not die! 5 "For God knows that in the day you eat from it your
eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." 6 When
the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and
that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she
gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were
opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made
themselves loin coverings. 8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in
the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the
presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 Then the LORD God called
to the man, and said to him, "Where are you?" 10 And he said, "I
heard the sound of Thee in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid
myself." 11 And He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you
eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?" 12 And the man said,
"The woman whom Thou gavest to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I
ate." 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have
done?" And the woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate." 14
And the LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, Cursed are you
more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly shall you go,
And dust shall you eat All the days of your life; 15 And I will put enmity Between
you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head,
And you shall bruise him on the heel." 16 To the woman He said, "I will
greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you shall bring forth children; Yet your
desire shall be for your husband, And he shall rule over you." 17 Then to Adam
He said, "Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from
the tree about which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat from it'; Cursed is the
ground because of you; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life. 18
"Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; And you shall eat the plants of the
field; 19 By the sweat of your face You shall eat bread, Till you return to the
ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall
return."
JOB 1:6, "Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present
themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them. 7 And the LORD said to
Satan, "From where do you come?" Then Satan answered the LORD and said,
"From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it." 8 And the
LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him
on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil." 9
Then Satan answered the LORD, "Does Job fear God for nothing? 10 "Hast
Thou not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? Thou
hast blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11
"But put forth Thy hand now and touch all that he has; he will surely curse Thee to
Thy face." 12 Then the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in
your power, only do not put forth your hand on him." So Satan departed from the
presence of the LORD."
1CH 21:1, "Then Satan stood up against Israel and moved David to number
Israel."
MAT 4:1, "Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be
tempted by the devil. 2 And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He
then became hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to Him, "If You are the
Son of God, command that these stones become bread." 4 But He answered and
said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that
proceeds out of the mouth of God.' 5 Then the devil took Him into the holy city;
and he had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to Him, "If You
are the Son of God throw Yourself down; for it is written, 'He will give His angels charge
concerning You'; and 'On their hands they will bear You up, Lest You strike Your foot
against a stone.' 7 Jesus said to him, "On the other hand, it is written, 'You
shall not put the Lord your God to the test.' 8 Again, the devil took Him to a very
high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world, and their glory; 9 and
he said to Him, "All these things will I give You, if You fall down and worship
me." 10 Then Jesus *said to him, "Begone, Satan! For it is written, 'You
shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.' 11 Then the devil left Him;
and behold, angels came and began to minister to Him."
EPH 2:1-2, "And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you
formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the
power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience."
EPH 6:11-13, "Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to stand
firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood,
but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness,
against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the
full armor of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done
everything, to stand firm."
ACT 5:3, "But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart
to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back some of the price of the land?"
1TH 2:18-19, "For we wanted to come to you - I, Paul, more than once - and
yet Satan thwarted us. For who is our hope or joy or crown of exultation? Is it not even
you, in the presence of our Lord Jesus at His coming?"
MAT 25:41, "Then He will also say to those on His left, 'Depart from Me,
accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his
angels;"
2TH 2:8-10, "And then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will
slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming;
that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and
signs and false wonders, and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish,
because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved."
WHAT CHANGED LUCIFER INTO THE DEVIL?
Lucifer, "the anointed chererub," became satan by
introducing the original sin into the universe - sin. In Isa 14:13-14, the sin is
given in detail. Notice the words "I will" in the two verses:
- "I will ascend into heaven -"
- "I will exalt my throne above the stars of God."
- "I will sit upon the mount of the congregation"
- "I will ascend above the heights of the clouds."
- "I will be like the most High."
Lucifer became satan by choosing his own will above the will of
God. When Lucifer said, "I will," sin began. Where did sin originate? In heaven,
in the heart of Lucifer.
NAMES AND TITLES OF SATAN
REV 12:9, "And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is
called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth,
and his angels were thrown down with him."
- devil - diabolos - slanderous, accusing falsely (34),
- satan - satanas - the adversary, satan, i.e. the devil (35),
MAT 12:24, "But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, "This man
casts out demons only by Beelzebul the ruler of the demons."
REV 12:9, "And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of
old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown
down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him."
JOH 12:31, "Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this
world shall be cast out."
2CO 11:14, "And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel
of light."
REV 12:10, "And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, "Now the
salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have
come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, who accuses them before
our God day and night."
JOH 8:44, "You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the
desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the
truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own
nature; for he is a liar, and the father of lies."
WHAT SATAN DOES
HE BLINDS THE MIND
2CO 4:3-4, "And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who
are perishing, in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the
unbelieving, that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who
is the image of God."
HE REMOVES THE WORD FROM HEARTS
MAT 13:19, "When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not
understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This
is the one on whom seed was sown beside the road."
HE TRAPS MEN
2TI 2:24-26, "And the Lord's bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be
kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, with gentleness correcting those who are
in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the
truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having
been held captive by him to do his will."
HE HINDERS THE WORK OF GOD
2CO 2:10-12, "But whom you forgive anything, I forgive also; for indeed
what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, I did it for your sakes in the presence
of Christ, in order that no advantage be taken of us by Satan; for we are not ignorant of
his schemes. Now when I came to Troas for the gospel of Christ and when a door was opened
for me in the Lord,"
LUK 22:31, "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift
you like wheat;"
HE SOWS TARES AMONG THE PEOPLE OF GOD
MAT 13:37, "And He answered and said, "The one who sows the good seed
is the Son of Man, 38 and the field is the world; and as for the good seed, these
are the sons of the kingdom; and the tares are the sons of the evil one; 39 and the
enemy who sowed them is the devil, and the harvest is the end of the age; and the reapers
are angels. 40 "Therefore just as the tares are gathered up and burned with
fire, so shall it be at the end of the age. 41 "The Son of Man will send forth
His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who
commit lawlessness, 42 and will cast them into the furnace of fire; in that place
there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
HE CAN CONSTANTLY CAUSE PROBLEMS FOR THE SERVANT OF THE LORD.
2CO 12:7, "And because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for
this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a
messenger of Satan to buffet me - to keep me from exalting myself!"
SATAN'S LIMITATIONS
HE IS NOT OMNIPOTENT (ALL POWERFUL)
JOB 2:5-6, "However, put forth Thy hand, now, and touch his bone and his
flesh; he will curse Thee to Thy face." So the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, he
is in your power, only spare his life."
HE IS NOT OMNIPRESENT (EVERYWHERE PRESENT)
MAT 4:11, "Then the devil left Him; and behold, angels came and began to
minister to Him."
MAT 12:26, "And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself;
how then shall his kingdom stand?"
HE IS NOT OMNISCIENT (ALL KNOWING)
1PE 5:8, "Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil,
prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour."
IN SUMMARY
EPH 4:27, "and do not give the devil an opportunity."
1CO 10:13, "No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man;
and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but
with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure
it."
