A CONVENIENT TIME
Acts 24:25, Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to
come, Felix was afraid and answered, "Go away for now; when I have a convenient time
I will call for you."
Paul's talk with Felix became so personal that Felix grew fearful. Felix, like Herod
Antipas (Mark 6:17, 18), had taken another man's wife. Paul's words were interesting until
they focused on "righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come." Many
people will be glad to discuss the gospel with you as long as it doesn't touch their lives
too personally. When it does, some will resist or run. But this is what the gospel is all
about--God's power to change lives. The gospel is not effective until it moves from
principles and doctrine into a life-changing dynamic. When someone resists or runs from
your witness, you have undoubtedly succeeded in making the gospel personal.
2 Tim 4:1, I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge
the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2, Preach the word! Be ready in
season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their
own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4
and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 5 But
you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill
your ministry.
PETER THOUGHT HE COULD DO ANYTHING
John 13:36, Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, where are You going?" Jesus
answered him, "Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you shall follow Me
afterward." 37 Peter said to Him, "Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will
lay down my life for Your sake." 38 Jesus answered him, "Will you lay down your
life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow till you have
denied Me three times. 14:1 "Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God,
believe also in Me. 2 "In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I
would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 "And if I go and prepare a
place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may
be also. 4 "And where I go you know, and the way you know." 5 Thomas said to
Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?" 6
Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father
except through Me.
Time magazine recently reported on a math test given to thirteen-year-olds from six
countries. The South Koreans received the best scores and the Americans received the
worst. Those taking the test were also asked to respond to the statement, I am good at
mathematics. Only 23 percent of the Koreans responded affirmatively to that statement --
the lowest percentage of yes responses -- while the Americans came in number one with the
highest number of yes answers. Someone observed, "American students may not know
math, but they have evidently absorbed the lessons of the newly fashionable self-esteem
curriculum wherein kids are taught to feel good about themselves." If we define pride
as an exaggerated opinion of oneself, it seems clear that self-esteem has produced pride.
PETER DIDN'T WANT TO CHANGE
Acts 10:9, The next day, as they went on their journey and drew near the city, Peter
went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour. 10 Then he became very hungry and
wanted to eat; but while they made ready, he fell into a trance 11 and saw heaven opened
and an object like a great sheet bound at the four corners, descending to him and let down
to the earth. 12 In it were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts,
creeping things, and birds of the air. 13 And a voice came to him, "Rise, Peter; kill
and eat." 14 But Peter said, "Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything
common or unclean." 15 And a voice spoke to him again the second time, "What God
has cleansed you must not call common."
In 1903 the Russian czar noticed a sentry posted for no apparent reason on the Kremlin
grounds. Upon inquiry, he discovered that in 1776 Catherine the Great found there the
first flower of spring. "Post a sentry here," she commanded, "so that no
one tramples that flower under foot!" - 129 years later a sentry was still being
posted!
Some traditions die hard.
PETER WANTED TO AVOID CRITICISM
Gal 2:11, Now when Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood him to his face, because he
was to be blamed; 12 for before certain men came from James, he would eat with the
Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those who were of
the circumcision. 13 And the rest of the Jews also played the hypocrite with him, so that
even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy. 14 But when I saw that they were not
straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all, "If
you, being a Jew, live in the manner of Gentiles and not as the Jews, why do you compel
Gentiles to live as Jews? 15 "We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the
Gentiles, 16 "knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by
faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified
by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh
shall be justified.
"The wife of a hard-to-please husband was determined to try her best to satisfy
him for just one day. `Darling,' she asked, `what would you like for breakfast this
morning?' He growled, `Coffee and toast, grits and sausage, and two eggs - one scramble
and one fried.' She soon had the food on the table and waited for a word of praise. After
a quick glance, he exclaimed, `Well, if you didn't scramble the wrong egg!"
WE WILL NOT HAVE VICTORY WITHOUT BATTLE
Matthew 16:21, From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to
Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be
killed, and be raised the third day. 22 Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him,
saying, "Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!" 23 But He
turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you
are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men." 24 Then Jesus said to
His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up
his cross, and follow Me. 25 "For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but
whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
SOMETIMES WE WANT MORE WITHOUT
MAKING ROOM IN OUR LIVES FOR IT
Mark 10:17, Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him,
and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?"
18 So Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is,
God. 19 "You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery,' 'Do not murder,' 'Do
not steal,' 'Do not bear false witness,' 'Do not defraud,' 'Honor your father and your
mother.'" 20 And he answered and said to Him, "Teacher, all these things I have
kept from my youth." 21 Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him,
"One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and
you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me." 22 But
he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
Have you wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of
Independence? 5 signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they
died. 12 had their homes ransacked and burned. 2 lost their sons in the Revolutionary
Army, another had 2 sons captured. 9 of the 56 fought and died from wounds or the
hardships of the Revolutionary War. There was and is a tremendous price to pay for
freedom.
NO DISCIPLE WITHOUT SACRIFICE
Luke 14:26 "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife
and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.
27 "And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. 28
"For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the
cost, whether he has enough to finish it-- 29 "lest, after he has laid the
foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 "saying,
'This man began to build and was not able to finish.' 31 "Or what king, going to make
war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten
thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 "Or else, while
the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace. 33
"So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.
The LORD counted the cost before he asks us to sacrifice. Our sacrifice is not for our
salvation - but to help others. Many have sacrificed to give each of us the opportunities
that allow us to become Christians. As Christians we are then asked to sacrifice to give
that same help to others.
HELP SHOULD BE DISTRIBUTED ACCORDING TO NEED - NOT ACCORDING TO THE CONVIENCE OF THE
HELPER. BE READY TO SUPPLY THE HELP, BUT LET GOD CONTROL THE TIMING.
