MORE THAN CONQUERORS
Romans 8:31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be
against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how
shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against
God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died,
and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes
intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation,
or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
These words were written to a church that would soon undergo terrible persecution. In
just a few years, Paul's hypothetical situations would turn into painful realities. This
passage reaffirms God's profound love for his people. No matter what happens to us, no
matter where we are, we can never be lost to his love. Suffering should not drive us away
from God, but help us to identify with him further and allow his love to reach us and heal
us.
These verses contain one of the most comforting promises in all Scripture. Believers
have always had to face hardships in many forms: persecution, illness, imprisonment, even
death. These could cause them to fear that they have been abandoned by Christ. But Paul
exclaims that it is impossible to be separated from Christ. His death for us is proof of
his unconquerable love. Nothing can stop Christ's constant presence with us. God tells us
how great his love is so that we will feel totally secure in him. If we believe these
overwhelming assurances, we will not be afraid.
Romans 8:36 As it is written: "For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are
accounted as sheep for the slaughter." 37 Yet in all these things we are more than
conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life,
nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor
height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love
of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
conquer = overcome
REV 12:11 "And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of
the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even to death.
The Christian is different than the World
Rom 12:17 Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight
of all men. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. 19
Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is
written, "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord. 20 "BUT IF YOUR
ENEMY IS HUNGRY, FEED HIM, AND IF HE IS THIRSTY, GIVE HIM A DRINK; FOR IN SO DOING YOU
WILL HEAP BURNING COALS UPON HIS HEAD." 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome
evil with good.
By referring to this proverb, Paul was saying that we should treat our enemies with
kindness so that they will become ashamed and turn from their sins. The best way to get
rid of enemies is to turn them into friends.
1JO 4:4 You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is
He who is in you than he who is in the world.
1JO 5:4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that
has overcome the world-- our faith.
We are promised protection
Psalm 91:1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the
shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust." 3 Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the
fowler And from the perilous pestilence. 4 He shall cover you with His feathers, And under
His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. 5 You shall
not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day, 6 Nor of the
pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. 7 A
thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come
near you. 8 Only with your eyes shall you look, And see the reward of the wicked. 9
Because you have made the LORD, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place,
10 No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; 11 For He shall
give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. 12 In their hands they
shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
One of the functions of angels is to watch over believers. There are examples of
guardian angels in Scripture. Verses 11 and 12 were quoted by Satan when he tempted Jesus.
It is comforting to know that God watches over us even in times of great stress and fear.
Hebrews 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who
will inherit salvation?
Matthew 18:10 "Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I
say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven.
Acts 12:7 Now behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the
prison; and he struck Peter on the side and raised him up, saying, "Arise
quickly!" And his chains fell off his hands. 8 Then the angel said to him, "Gird
yourself and tie on your sandals"; and so he did. And he said to him, "Put on
your garment and follow me."
Acts 27:22 "And now I urge you to take heart, for there will be no loss of life
among you, but only of the ship. 23 "For there stood by me this night an angel of the
God to whom I belong and whom I serve, 24 "saying, 'Do not be afraid, Paul; you must
be brought before Caesar; and indeed God has granted you all those who sail with you.'
Often to be more than conquerors, we must pray for God not to come to our aid
Luke 23:33 And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified
Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left. 34 Then Jesus
said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do." And they
divided His garments and cast lots.
Jesus asked God to forgive the people who were putting him to death and God answered
that prayer by opening up the way of salvation even to Jesus' murderers. The Roman
centurion and soldiers who witnessed the crucifixion said, "Surely he was the Son of
God" Soon many priests were converted to the Christian faith.
Steven was more than a conqueror
Acts 7:55 But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory
of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, 56 and said, "Look! I see the
heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!" 57 Then they
cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord; 58 and
they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their clothes at
the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 And they stoned Stephen as he was calling on God
and saying, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." 60 Then he knelt down and cried out
with a loud voice, "Lord, do not charge them with this sin." And when he had
said this, he fell asleep.
As Stephen died, he spoke words very similar to Jesus' words on the cross. The early
believers were glad to suffer as Jesus had suffered because that meant they were counted
worthy. Stephen was ready to suffer like Jesus, even to the point of asking forgiveness
for his murderers. Such a forgiving response comes only from the Holy Spirit. The Spirit
can also help us respond as Stephen did with love for our enemies.
Paul changed in answer to Steven's prayer
Acts 9:4 Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul,
Saul, why are you persecuting Me?" 5 And he said, "Who are You, Lord?" Then
the Lord said, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick
against the goads." 6 So he, trembling and astonished, said, "Lord, what do You
want me to do?" Then the Lord said to him, "Arise and go into the city, and you
will be told what you must do."
Gal 1:13 For you have heard of my former conduct in Judaism, how I persecuted the
church of God beyond measure and tried to destroy it. 14 And I advanced in Judaism beyond
many of my contemporaries in my own nation, being more exceedingly zealous for the
traditions of my fathers. 15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's
womb and called me through His grace, 16 to reveal His Son in me, that I might preach Him
among the Gentiles, I did not immediately confer with flesh and blood, 17 nor did I go up
to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me; but I went to Arabia, and returned
again to Damascus.
Jesus told us to forgive others
Matthew 6:9 "In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be
Your name. 10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us
this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. 13 And
do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom
and the power and the glory forever. Amen. 14 "For if you forgive men their
trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 "But if you do not forgive
men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
