SCENE: Sandy and Phil on stage
Sandy: Phil, why weren't you at Sunday School last week?
Phil: (Boasting): I was doing a poor old lady a favor.
Sandy: That was nice.
Phil: I told her if she would give me ten dollars I'd rake
her yard for her. Wasn't that sweet of me?
Sandy: Why didn't you do it for free since she was poor?
Phil: What kind of person do you think I am? (Getting
angry) I'm not doing anything that doesn't give a prize or an award
in exchange. I'm not doing anything for free!
Sandy: Well, I sure do hate even more that you missed Sunday
School last week.
Phil: What was so great at Sunday School anyway? It's always
the same thing, isn't it?
Sandy: Not if you really listen and want to learn about how
God wants us to live. Do you?
Phil: Sure, but ...
Sandy: Well, then, I'll tell you what our teacher said since
you missed it. But listen closely! Jesus said, "Do not lay up for yourselves
treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but
lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where
thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be
also." Now where do you think your heart was when you were raking those leaves?
Phil: I was thinking about that ten dollars I'd get when I
finished!
Sandy: That's exactly what Jesus was talking about, laying up
earthly treasures. That ten dollars could be destroyed and you would never have it again,
but Jesus said to lay up treasures in heaven where they can't be destroyed. That means
helping people simply because it's the right thing to do.
Phil: Now I understand. (Exits)
Sandy: Where are you going?
Phil: (Offstage): I'm going back to the lady's house to
return the ten dollars and see if I can sweep her driveway for free.
Sandy: (To congregation): I believe he finally got the
picture.
(She exits)
