You Don't Say

SCENE: Phil and Della on stage

Phil: Guess what, Della?
Della: I don't know, what?
Phil: You've got to promise not to tell anyone.
Della: Sure, sure, I promise.
Phil: (In a whisper) Well, I was told by a very reliable source...
Della: Wait! Hold it! Stop right there!
Phil: What's wrong, Della?
Della: Are you going to tell me some gossip?
Phil: No, man, I'm about to tell you what Mark did in Mrs Smith's class yesterday.
Della: What Mark did? You mean Mark Hall?
Phil: (More excited) Yeah, that's the one. Well, I was told that Mark...
Della: Phil, did you see what you're about to tell with your own eyes?
Phil: No, but Jimmy's cousin, Johnny, said Jerry Burns told him.
Della: Oh, brother, that's gossip and hearsay, Phil. You shouldn't spread rumors and gossip; that can be very damaging.
Phil: Damaging? Who would it damage?
Della: First of all, you could be spreading something that may not be true, especially if you didn't see it take place yourself. And secondly, it could be damaging to you.
Phil: (Shocked) To me? How?
Della: It's like this: If you continue to spread gossip and rumors, pretty soon no one will want to be your friend because they can't trust you.
Phil: Gee, I never thought about it like that.
Della: That's what happens with far too many people. They don't think about what they say.
Phil: What if it's something good about a person?
Della: That's different. If you want to share something good, then everybody benefits. People begin to see you as a loving person who is always sharing good news about people; and that is the kind of friend most people want.
Phil: Yeah, I see - kinda like, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," huh?
Della: That's right. Now, what was it you wanted to tell me about Mark Hall?
Phil: You know, I can't for the life of me remember what it was.
Della: You don't say. Well, let's go and celebrate your loss of memory.
