SCENE: Phil and Gra'ma on stage
Gra'ma: I hear you have a new kid in your class at school.
Phil: Yes, his name is Jack and the teacher said he is
"special."
Gra'ma: What did she mean by that?
Phil: He is deaf and has trouble speaking.
Gra'ma: In the past, he would have been called handicap, or a
lot of other things that are not very flattering.
Phil: Why are they called "special?"
Gra'ma: I don't know the full reason, but it is a good choice
because that is the way God looks at them.
Phil: But some of the kids were making fun of him.
Gra'ma: People often do not value things as God does. Those
who are least in man's eyes are often greatest in God's eyes.
Phil: But they were talking about Jack behind his back,
because he couldn't hear them.
Gra'ma: I heard he is a Christian and I know God has an angel
looking over each of us. Jack may not of heard them - but his angel did - and so did God.
Phil: But how can it be good not to hear?
Gra'ma: God does not look for what we can not do - but for
what we can do. He has a work for each of us to do that fits our abilities.
Phil: But don't we need to be strong to serve God well?
Gra'ma: Paul found out that God's strength is perfected in
our weakness. When we are overconfident, we may forget God, but when we know we need help
we trust Him. We each need his help.
Phil: I'm still glad I can hear.
Gra'ma: It's good to be thankful for what we can do, but at
times you would be better off if you turned a deaf ear to gossip.
Phil: You've got a point there.
Gra'ma: Remember, we all have things we can not do, or at
least can not do well. The only real handicap people are those who don't have Jesus as
their Lord. The strong are losers without God and the weak become winners with him.
Phil: Tell me some examples from the Bible.
Gra'ma: A small, young lad named David defeated a trained
giant named Goliath. Samson's failed God when he was strong, yet he won his greatest
victory when he was blind. Many times the small armies of God's people would defeat large
enemy armies.
Phil: Thanks Gra'ma. I think we are all "special"
in God's eyes.
