SCENE: Phil and Della on stage.
Della: Phil, can you say the Lord's prayer?
Phil: Yes, just listen. Our Father, which art in heaven. Hallowed
be thy name...
Della: Wait. What do you mean by that?
Phil: It means...In means...Good grief, I don't know what it
means. How should I know? It's just part of the prayer. What does it mean?
Della: Hallowed means honored, holy, or wonderful.
Phil: Hey, that makes sense. I never thought about that before.
"Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven."
Della: Well...What are you doing to make God's will be done
on earth?
Phil: Nothing. I guess...I just thought that it would be neat if
God was in control of everything down here.
Della: Does God have control of you?
Phil: Weeeeeelll...I-I-I go to church. I even take my Bible
sometimes. I read my Sunday School lesson one time last month.
Della: But Phil, you have to let God control your bad habits,
your temper, the way you talk about others, your-
Phil: Will you quit picking on me. I'm just as good as some of
the people at church.
Della: But Phil, I thought you were praying for God's will to
be done. If that is to happen, it will have to start with folks like us.
Phil: Oh well, I guess I do have some hang-ups, now that you
mention it.
Della: Yeah! Let me name a few. You have a terrible...
Phil: Wait a minute! I know what I am. Let me finish this prayer.
"Give us this day our daily bread..."
Della: You need to cut down on bread. You are overweight now.
Phil: What is this? Get Phil Day? Let me finish. "Forgive us
our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
Della: What about Bill?
Phil: I knew you would interrupt me again. I knew you would bring
him up! But he has told lies about me and got me in a lot of trouble.
Della: But your prayer - what about it?
Phil: I didn't mean it...I mean, I-I, uh, uh, I mean not that
part of it.
Della: Well, at least you are honest. But you are not
comfortable with that much bitterness in you, are you?
Phil: No! But I'll feel better when I get even with Bill. Boy,
have I got some plans for him.
Della: You should forgive Bill. Then the hate and sin will only
be his problems. Then you will feel better.
Phil: I'm not sure that is the best way. Boy, I would like to get
even with him. I'll, I'll...but...all right! I'll forgive Bill. Don't interrupt...let me
finish. "And lead us not into temptations, but deliver us from evil."
Della: Just don't go places where you will be tempted.
Phil: What do you mean by that?
Della: Quit hanging around with those boys who cuss all the time.
They are always bragging about "popping pills," and just everything! They say
they are having fun, but they don't know what life really is.
Phil: Yeah, I get the message, loud and clear. Let me finish.
"For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever, Amen."
