SCENE: Grandma and Phil on stage
Phil: Grandma, do you know it's almost Christmas?
Grandma: Yes, what does Christmas mean to you, Phil?
Phil: Presents, and school vacation, and presents, and food,
and presents, and Santa, and presents, and ...
Grandma: I think you have a one track mind, Phil. You didn't
even mention the real reason for Christmas. We will discuss this more before Christmas.
But, in the first place why are you wishing Christmas was here, there are a lot of other
things you like that are going to happen between now and then.
Phil: There's nothing to do till then.
Grandma: There are ball games to go to or play in, there are
friends to be with, and of course school to enjoy.
Phil: What!! I don't like school.
Grandma: That really isn't true. Do you remember how much you
missed being with your school friends last summer?
Phil: Yes, I did. But I still don't like school.
Grandma: Phil, school is just like any other experience in
life. There are things we like about it and things we don't. You know how much you like
basketball games, like when our team beat Orleans in the last few seconds Friday. By the
way, wasn't it fun to have Robbie picked on the conference football allstar team. He was
even picked for two different positions.
Phil: Yes, but that's not really school.
Grandma: You know how happy you were about that "A"
you received the other day? By the way, if there really is nothing to do, I guess you
would be happy to just spend the time from now to Christmas in your room.
Phil: By myself? How would I eat?
Grandma: You mean you enjoy being with others and eating?
Phil: I guess so.
Grandma: You see there are lots of things between now and
Christmas that you will enjoy.
