SCENE: Della and Grandma on stage
Della: Well Gra'ma, I guess I sinned today.
Gra'ma: Just an average day, you say? Sorry about that.
Seriously now, what happened?
Della: Mary jumped line at the cafeteria today. It made me so
mad. So, like I said, I sinned.
Gra'ma: Let's examine two things you just said. First of all,
no one can make another person mad. And second, anger is not sin - it depends on what you
do about it.
Della: But Mary made me mad!!!
Gra'ma: Did everyone in line get mad?
Della: No.
Gra'ma: Don't you see? If she had made you mad, everyone
should have been mad. She acted wrong. But each person is responsible for their own
reactions. You may not be able to change her actions, but you can work on your reaction.
Della: How can I do that?
Gra'ma: That brings us back to the second part. Anger is not
sin, but our actions and thoughts may be sin, depending on how we react to anger.
Della: What do you mean?
Gra'ma: What did you do after you became mad?
Della: Nothing. I like Mary and I wouldn't want to hurt her.
I was angry because I was disappointed in her actions.
Gra'ma: That is OK. Jesus was angry at times, but He never
sinned. Maybe Mary didn't mean to hurt anyone. Maybe no one ever told her it is wrong to
jump line.
Della: So I didn't sin then. Good. What would be an example
of sinful actions?
Gra'ma: If, after you got angry, you held a grudge, or looked
for a way to "get even" with Mary - that would be sin.
Della: Why would I want to get even with Mary? I like her.
Gra'ma: That's the point. Your love for Mary resulted in your
good actions. If someone didn't have that love, they may have acted wrong.
Della: I'm sure glad I let Jesus help me love others.
Gra'ma: Me too.
